This was at an Award Ceremony where Forbury's restaurant was voted one of the 10th best French restaurants in the South of England.
Xavier gets a second bite at success.
Four years after he missed out on a chance to open a new restaurant in Reading town centre, Xavier Le-Bellego has finally made it. Mr Le-Bellego, 35, was pipped at the post by Paul Clerehugh to open at One London Street (now London Street Brasserie). But thanks to the Forbury Square development, a plush new site became available and Mr Le-Bellego will open his French Restaurant, Forbury’s, in the third week of April. Mr Le-Bellego, who came to the UK in 1991, worked his way up through some of the UK’s top French restaurants including Le Gavroche and L’Ortolan and has worked for Raymond Blanc. More recently he was general manager at the Redhouse near Newbury where he has won the Gastro Pub of the Year for food/wine matching for the last two years. Now he has realised a long-standing dream to run his own restaurant and reckons Reading is under served. Mr Le-Bellego said, “When you think the disposable income in Reading is as high as it is in London, why has Reading got so few good restaurants?” Forbury’s, which will have 100 seats, some outdoors, will offer a one course meal for after-work customers and a la carte in the evenings. Some English dishes will be provided. Business customers are expected at lunchtimes and the restaurant will boast a private room and bar. Car parking is available for those who book and there will be exclusive selection of vintage wines amongst the extensive list. Three other restaurants including Carlucchio’s are also planned for Forbury Square.
High quality French restaurant opens in Forbury Square.
Xavier Le-Bellego, the “Gastro Pub of the Year” title holder for the past two years, has sold his interests in the Red House country restaurant near Newbury to run a new French brasserie-restaurant called Forbury’s in the centre of Reading. Le-Bellego, who came to England in 1991 “to learn the language”, has a CV that reads like a Who’s Who of the restaurant world. In the last 12 years he has worked for Raymond Blanc at the renowed L e Manior aux Quat Saisons near Oxford, with the Roux Brothers in London and with “French Leave” celebrity chef John Burton Race at L’Ortolan near Reading. He said Forbury’s – the first restaurant to open in the new Forbury Square complex – will serve “high quality French-style dishes at sensible prices”. The 90 cover restaurant (plus 30 seats on an outdoor terrace and 16 in a private dining area) is due to open in April and will have a distinct French atmosphere offering a set lunch at £13.95, patisserie style menu in the afternoon and a-la-carte in the evening.
